Experience 

  • Head of IP/IT Practice group of JSM
  • Covers the full range of contentious and commercial IP and IT work. Also practises in franchise law advising clients on setting up franchised operations in Hong Kong and in the PRC. Advises also on entertainment law acting for copyright collecting societies, production companies, celebrities and artistes. Serves on various professional committees, including the IP Committee of the Law Society of Hong Kong and comments on the drafting of IP-related laws of Hong Kong. A significant part of his practice involves PRC matters and is amongst the first to handle IP enforcement work in China.
  • Recommended since 1997 by local and foreign publications as one of Hong Kong's leading IP practitioners. One of Hong Kong lawyers who received the most recommendations.
  • A seasoned lecturer who is often invited and lectures extensively giving over 100 lectures, seminars and presentations to lawyers, enterprises, universities and members of the public on IP and IT subjects in Hong Kong, China, Singapore, Malaysia and the US. Has since 2004 represented the Law Society of Hong Kong to join with the Intellectual Property Department of HKSAR to lecture and advocate to PRC enterprises the importance of intellectual property and has lectured under this programme in the following cities in the PRC:- Nanjing, Wuxi, Suzhou, Shaoguan, Shunde, Weizhou, Jiangmen, Zhuhai and Zhongshan.
  • Published many articles and chapters on IP and IT subjects. Co-authored a book called A Practical Approach to Intellectual Property Law in Hong Kong which is a popular legal publication of Sweet & Maxwell and a recommended book of the three universities offering law degree in Hong Kong. Is also the co-authors of the IP chapters in Tort Law & Practice in Hong Kong, a law reference book.

  • Andrew Lau Wai Keung - advised this award-winning film director (whose film Infernal Affairs was adapted by Oscar director Martin Scorsese for the Oscar winning film The Departed) on his contracts, including his first Hollywood director contract
  • Andy Lau Tak Wah - advising this veteran Asian megastar and his companies on entertainment contracts including an unprecedented transaction in which his company sold a song library of over 500 songs
  • Anheuser-Busch - advised this beer giant on their dispute with Czech Budejovicky Budvar and assisted them with trade mark registration and enforcement in Hong Kong and China
  • Ann Taylor Inc - handling their trade mark portfolio in Hong Kong and in the PRC
  • Ausway Trading Limited - advising on their collaboration/cross-over with Adidas and Disney; their D-Mop and Y-3 operations in the region
  • China Star - advising this Hong Kong film company on the sale of 100 films to STAR TV
  • Chow Yun Fat - advising this Asian megastar who also made a name in Hollywood on his entertainment and advertisement contracts and related issues for more than 15 years, including those for the films Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, The Curse of the Golden Flower, The Children of HuangShi etc.
  • Composers & Authors Society of Hong Kong Limited - handled their first Copyright Tribunal reference under the new Copyright Ordinance initiated by the five local telecasters to review its licensing scheme and fee structure.
  • Connie Chan Po Chu - advising this legendary film icon on her contracts who, after 26 years of retirement, has made consecutive successful play performances
  • Dolby Laboratories Inc - advised and handled their IP registration, enforcement and licensing in Hong Kong and the PRC. Successful raids in China and legal actions during exhibitions in Hong Kong were widely reported in the newspaper
  • Doubleclick - advised on their standard contracts for Hong Kong and the PRC
  • Ecco - advised this renowned shoe company on their franchised agreement for Hong Kong
  • Fenix Group - advising Anteprima operations and trade mark portfolio; advised this group on various joint venture and franchised operations in Hong Kong including Prada, Furla, Atsuro Tayama, Equipment, Richart Chocolate, etc
  • Hang Seng Bank - advising on trade marks and index licensing; advised on internet banking, domain name disputes, IT acquisitions and contracts relating to electronic payment
  • Hong Kong Comics and Animation Federation - advising the largest comics publishers in Hong Kong on anti-piracy strategy; successfully assisted them to lobby for rental rights and improved measures to combat parallel imports; advising them on the licensing scheme for rental rights
  • Hong Kong Film Industry - assisted them to successfully lobby for certain amendments to the copyright law, including rental rights for films
  • Hong Kong Jockey Club - advising them on major IT, equipment and system development, acquisition and licensing projects; also advising on gambling and betting legislation, related activities and IP issues; advising them on their Betting Rules
  • Hospital Authority - assisting them with their IP issues and patent clearances for drugs
  • Li & Fung Group - handling their IP issues in many business acquisitions and ventures and handled close to 100 successful cases requesting other entities to change their names to one not including the distinctive Chinese name of this group
  • OVO - advising this Hong Kong renowned interior designer company on their contracts for their furniture shop operation
  • Procter & Gamble - advising on trade mark registration and enforcement
  • Quiksilver - successfully handled a dispute relating to one of their most important marks
  • Universities - advised University of Hong Kong, Polytechnic University, City University and Open University on their IP policies and IP issues. Advised also the Heads of Joint Universities Committee on copyright matters relating to education
  • Vocational Training Council - advised on a number of their major initiatives and projects including the contract for the architectural building design competition for their new building
  • Warner Brothers - advised on the local issues of their production of Batman - The Dark Knight Returns in Hong Kong
  • Wong To Yick - advising this elderly gentleman on the convoluted dispute with his children involving trade mark and goodwill ownership
