Experience 

Charles is an associate who practices tax law in a national and international, including European, context. He is active in the fields of corporate income tax (i.e. international tax planning and transfer pricing), indirect taxes and tax policy, and has experience in litigation before the Belgian courts and negotiation of rulings with the tax authorities.

Before joining Mayer Brown in 2007, Charles built his experience in a Belgian private law practice and a consulting firm in Belgium and Luxembourg. He also served as Structurer in the Credit Derivatives desk of Fortis Bank.

Charles lectures tax law at the University of Louvain-la-Neuve (Belgium) and is a member of the International Fiscal Association. He is fluent in English and French and proficient in Dutch.

Notable Engagements 

• Advised and assisted the Belgian branch of a Japanese credit institution in launching a new Swap activity in more than eighteen countries.
• Advised and structured the set up of two leveraged loans / distressed debts funds for a French private equity firm
• EUR 208 million securitization of consumer credit loan receivables for a Dutch bank with branches in Belgium and Germany.
• Pan-European structuring and organization of operations of a USD 500 million feeder fund.
• Assisting in the tax structuring and implementation of the Only Representative activities (in the context of the REACH regulation) of a Russian steel company.
• Taking care of Transfer pricing and VAT aspects of SAP implementation for a US pharmaceutical company.
• Assisting a US-based telecommunication group to expand its operations across Europe and Asia, taking into account the requirements set forth by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) as lead investor.
