Experience
Friedrich Merz serves on Mayer Brown's Partnership Board and concentrates his practice on corporate matters, including mergers and acquisitions, banking and finance and compliance.
He also has significant political experience, including serving as a member of the European Parliament (MEP) (1989-1994), as a member of the German Bundestag (MP) (1994 to date), as Deputy Chairman of the CDU/CSU Parliamentary Group (1998-2000, 2002-2004), and as Chairman of the CDU/CSU-Parliamentary Group and Minority Leader in the House (2000-2002).
Prior to joining Mayer Brown, Friedrich was a partner with two national law firms in Cologne (1989-2004) and at the German Association of Chemical Industry in Frankfurt/Bonn (1986-1989), and served as a judge in the Local Court in Saarbrücken (1985-1986). In addition to his native German, he speaks English and French.
