Work Experience Programmes

What we offer

We offer three Work Experience Programmes each year. The programme will give you the opportunity to gain valuable experience of life as a trainee solicitor at Mayer Brown, whilst being paid a competitive salary.

Open Days

We hold Open Days in December and January, which are open to all undergraduates and graduates from any degree discipline. They offer you the opportunity to gain a more detailed insight into life as a lawyer in a global law firm such as Mayer Brown. During the day, you will hear presentations from partners from some of our key practice areas, enjoy a networking lunch with lawyers of all levels, participate in a commercial awareness session and learn key hints and tips on how to navigate your way through the trainee solicitor recruitment process.

Applications for Open Days are made via the online application system, which opens on 1 November 2012.

The Work Experience Programme

During your time at the firm, you will gain experience in two different practice areas, working alongside Mayer Brown lawyers, assisting them on real deals and matters, giving you first-hand experience of life in a global law firm. Before our programmes start, we will ask you which practice areas interest you to give you the opportunity to gain experience in areas of law that appeal to you the most. In addition to gaining practical legal work experience, you will also be invited to attend presentations on our various practice areas to give you more insight into the breadth of the firm. There will also be plenty of social activities organised, including a day in one of our European offices. During the course of the Work Experience Programme, you should be able to meet, work and socialise with many of the people who work at Mayer Brown, including trainees, associates and partners. About one-third of our trainees completed a Work Experience Programme at Mayer Brown and play an active role in the organisation of each programme, with a trainee ‘buddy’ being allocated to each participant to support you throughout your time with the firm.

Assessment process during the programme

The Work Experience Programmes are designed as a two-way process: for you to find out as much information as possible about the firm and the people you will potentially be working alongside as well as for us to get to know you. We ask your supervisors for feedback during the scheme, and this in conjunction with a written business analysis exercise and an interview with two partners at the end of the scheme, form the basis for our training contract decisions.

When to apply

Applications for our Work Experience Programmes open on 1 November each year and close on 31 January. Please refer to the 'Making an application' section of this website for more information on the recruitment process.
