Work Assignments
Summer associates are assigned work based on their expressed preferences. Work is assigned through a work assignment coordinator. We encourage summer associates, however, to seek work informally by meeting with partners and associates with whom they have a shared interest. This approach allows for summer associates to explore different practices as well to interact with a variety of lawyers. Solid work assignments constitute the cornerstone of a great summer program. Past assignments were chosen with the aim of giving our summer associates a realistic view of the type and quality of the work our entry-level associates undertake. Mentors also help ensure that summer associates work with a variety of lawyers in projects geared to providing the summers with a true perspective of the work performed by entering associates.

Training
Flexibility in the assignment process, informal and formal performance feedback, a network of accessible mentors from every practice area, and formal training programs all contribute to highly customized program that offers a broad array of opportunities for the individual, growth and development of our summer associates.

Summer associates typically work as generalists during the summer and they may request work in any of the practice areas. Our lawyers work closely with the summer associates on client matters and summer associates are encouraged to request informal feedback upon completion of an assignment. Summer associates are also invited to practice area meetings and training sessions. More formal discussions about each summer associate's progress are conducted twice during the program. All summer associates are assigned an associate mentor. All of the partners and associates in the Recruiting Committee maintain an "open door" policy for regular meetings with any summer associate and a member of the Recruiting Committee conducts a seminar at the beginning of the summer on advice geared towards helping summer associates have a positive experience leading to an offer.

We have instituted a weekly brown bag lunch program designed to provide formal training as well as information about the various practice areas here at Mayer Brown. As part of this program, our experienced lawyers make presentations which include an overview of the type of work performed by lawyers practicing in those areas including an introduction to basic legal issues involved in the practice. Training opportunities are further strengthened by the summer pro bono options.

The summer training and development programs are specially designed to aid each associate in shaping the future direction of their own career in the practice of law.
